In the spirit of service that sees it working alongside non-profit organizations, SB+ gladly accepted the request from Lions Arezzo Host and made the expertise of its design firm available.

There were many issues to resolve: from the size of the surface to be illuminated to the architectural features of great value, such as the main facade staircase, the portals, the rose window, the mullioned windows, and the bell tower.

Highly technological solutions were identified that also ensure energy savings in line with environmental protection principles.

The result achieved was a comprehensive and uniform night lighting, similar to the daytime view.

The lights were turned on during an event promoted by the Diocese of Arezzo, Cortona, and Sansepolcro, the Municipality of Arezzo, and the Province of Arezzo, in the presence of the highest authorities. During the ceremony, recognition plaques were presented not only to the organizers and SB+, but also to AEC Illuminazione, a local company and leader in public lighting, which contributed to the initiative’s success.

Specifically, the goal of our project was to design a lighting system that would restore, during nighttime viewing, the uniformity of the cathedral’s daytime appearance without altering its characteristics.

The project involved various complexities, and the positioning and choice of the type of lighting fixture to be used had to take several aspects into account:

Type and color of the surface to be illuminated: the local sandstone absorbs a lot of light; to best render its real coloring, 3,000 Kelvin LEDs were planned following tests conducted with the Soprintendenza.

The volumes to be highlighted: the cathedral covers a floor area of approximately 70 x 30m and has heights ranging from 20 to 30m, not to mention that the bell tower alone, with its long single-light windows, exceeds 70m in height. The surface to be illuminated is therefore roughly equal to a soccer field; however, thanks to LED technology, it was possible to achieve this by installing a power load of less than 3kW.

The surrounding environment, the location of installation points, and the distance between the projector and the subject: strategic positions were chosen on the facades of the surrounding buildings—the Bishop’s Palace and the Palace of the Province—on the roofs of the Rectory, and on some lighting poles in the city’s hilltop park, the “Prato.” As is evident, the entire context in which the system was integrated is of extremely high historical and artistic value. Therefore, great attention was also paid to the installation methods of the lighting fixtures, providing solutions with a low impact on the monuments from both an aesthetic and structural point of view, in accordance with the most established philosophies of low-impact and reversible restoration.

Click the image below to watch the video The request to design the lighting for the Arezzo Cathedral was received as a privilege, but also as an exciting challenge due to its complexity.
