The Service examines two properties:
- Fortino Santa Barbara in the Medicean Pier, Livorno
- Military Health School and Chiostro del Maglio, Florence
The first Service has been delivered and is the subject of this description; the second is currently in progress.
The Service included the following activities:
- laser-scan survey with point cloud production;
- BIM modeling of the cloud and subsequent modeling (in REVIT) of the architectural, structural, and systems as-built state;
- static and seismic vulnerability assessment;
- technical and economic feasibility design of the hypothesized interventions;
The Survey
The laser-scanner survey of Fortino Santa Barbara covered the two buildings that form the complex, one dating back to the Medici era and one from the early twentieth century. It was decided not to create a single point cloud but to divide the databases, creating one that included all the exteriors, including the surrounding streets, and subsequently a single one for the interiors of each building. The individual models defined by the point cloud were subsequently georeferenced through a survey carried out with a GNSS antenna, which read the coordinates of 4 nails fixed to the ground. The metric data, preparatory to the three-dimensional modeling, were acquired using the Faro model S 70 3D scanner; approximately 300 stations were made, covering the entire surface of the buildings and the area involved. The survey activity was accompanied by an extensive photographic campaign. All acquired data were processed with SCENE software and finally exported in .rcs format for insertion into the BIM environment.
BIM Modeling
Through the BIM modeling of all acquired data, it was possible to develop the architectural, structural, and systems models. All modeling operations were performed in compliance with the instructions contained in the Contracting Authority’s guidelines and the specifications of the Information Management Plan.
Static and Seismic Vulnerability Assessment
Once the mechanical properties of the building’s structural elements were defined, the construction details investigated, and the soil classified, the building analysis was carried out using the FME method, defining three-dimensional models with 3Muri software. The seismic analysis, non-linear static, was accompanied by the static analysis. The buildings had the following safety levels:
- US1: local 64%, global 57%
- US2: local 33%, global 50%
In the design state, the following safety level was achieved:
- US1: local >100%, global >100%
- US2: local >100%, global >100%
In both buildings, albeit with different extensions, the following interventions were hypothesized:
- masonry thickening;
- injection of binding mixtures;
- insertion of headers;
- reinforced plaster on single-head brick walls;
- metal tie rods;
- floor reinforcement;
- reinforcement of vaults with composite materials.
