SB+ is always pleased to offer its professional expertise in monumental heritage to the Community and therefore gladly participates in pro-bono initiatives for works that enhance the artistic and cultural fabric of our city.
The most recent initiative involves the design of a glazed vestibule to be placed at the central portal of the Church of Santa Maria della Pieve, or, for the people of Arezzo, simply “La Pieve”.
The intervention was requested by the Diocese of Arezzo, Cortona, and Sansepolcro so that the main portal could be used for access by the faithful. Currently, only the side door is used because it is equipped with a vestibule. The aim is to limit thermal and acoustic exchange between the interior and exterior of the Church and to ensure the environmental comfort of the faithful during religious services.
This request was taken up by Rotary Arezzo Est, which, along with other sponsors, provided the necessary funds. SB+ offered the design and works supervision free of charge.
The work consists of a steel and glass structure with openable sections on three sides—smaller ones on the sides, and a larger one at the front—allowing easy entry and exit for the faithful. The structure is, of course, designed according to the principles for interventions on protected heritage sites, thus ensuring minimal invasiveness and maximum reversibility.
The central portion of the structure can also open upwards, like the main wooden portal, to allow free passage up to a height of 5.00 m. This feature is necessary to allow processions with the banners of the city’s ancient noble families to enter.
