Major Cultural Heritage Projects – San Casciano dei Bagni, Siena – Construction of the new museum and thermal archaeological park

The Soprintendenza for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Siena, Grosseto and Arezzo served as the Contracting Authority for the project titled “San Casciano dei Bagni – Functional interventions for the creation of the thermal archaeological park at the Etruscan and Roman sanctuary of Bagno Grande in San Casciano dei Bagni.” The objective of the project is to create the new Museum and related offices through the restoration, repurposing, and enhancement of the former Arcipretura building and Palazzo Barbetti in San Casciano dei Bagni, Siena.

Service Breakdown

Regarding the seismic risk component, a static safety verification and seismic vulnerability analysis were conducted on the two buildings involved in the project. This included performing necessary investigations and the preliminary identification of interventions aimed at reducing seismic risk, followed by the restoration and redevelopment of the two properties.

The service was organized into:

  • Historical and Documentary Analysis
  • Planning, execution, and management of structural and soil investigations
  • FEM Modeling
  • Verification
  • Design of necessary interventions

Results

A Knowledge Level (LC) of 2 was achieved. The buildings had the following safety levels:

  • Arcipretura: 29% local, 42% global
  • Palazzo Barbetti: 24% local, 45% global

In the design state, the following safety levels were achieved:

  • Arcipretura: local >100%, global >100%
  • Palazzo Barbetti: local >100%, global 66%

In both buildings, although to different extents, the following interventions were planned:

  • Masonry repair;
  • Creation of new openings;
  • Closing of niches/openings with interlocking connections;
  • Repair/replacement of lintels;
  • Consolidation of stone masonry – lime grout injections;
  • Consolidation of brick masonry – reinforced plaster (FRP);
  • Installation of steel tie rods or bracing;
  • Thickening of existing brick masonry;
  • Consolidation of structural masonry vaults;
  • Consolidation of wooden floors;
  • Reinforcement of flat floors or roofs with the insertion of metal beams.
